Customer: Monster Pets — #1 pet seller on Amazon, top-50–75 overall
Model: High-velocity, on-demand reseller — ~4,500 active SKUs replenished weekly, 100,000 units/week
The shift: From Amazon Freight’s largest East Coast shipper, drowning in placement fees and 30-to-40-day inbound delays, to near-zero placement fees and inbound in days.
At a glance
- Placement fees: From six figures in peak months to effectively zero.
- Speed to market: 14–20 days faster to Amazon, per SKU.
- Faster Prime-eligible inventory: From the mid-teens to ~86–88% in 6 days.
- Prep supply costs: Down ~60% by reusing manufacturer corrugated instead of buying new boxes for Amazon.
- Labor: Down — the prep line is faster and less labor-intensive after rebuilding around ZonPrep’s process.
The company
Monster Pets started 24 years ago as a brick-and-mortar pet store in South Philadelphia. Owner Brian Fennel and his partners grew it to three locations, then made a deliberate bet on e-commerce — eBay first, then Amazon’s vendor side, then the seller side. Today the business is 98% online, sells across Amazon, Walmart, eBay, and a newly launched proprietary site, and runs as the #1 pet seller on Amazon, routinely landing in the top 50–75 of all sellers on the platform.
What makes Monster Pets unusual is the model. They aren’t a brand owner sending in tractor-trailers of one or two ASINs. They’re a true on-demand, high-velocity reseller — roughly 4,500 active SKUs in the catalog, replenished weekly from distributors and manufacturers, moving 100,000 units a week out of a 65,000-square-foot facility. Every day in the pipeline is a day of cash tied up in inventory. For a business like this, speed isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the whole game.
“We’re not like a normal seller that ZonPrep would have. I’m not a manufacturer, I’m not a brand owner. We have probably 4,500 activations in our catalog that we replenish weekly. So saving those days in the pipeline are game-changing for us.” — Brian Fennel, Owner, Monster Pets
The problem: fast inventory, slow platform
Monster Pets could buy and sell faster than almost anyone. The bottleneck was getting product into Amazon.
Shipping directly into Amazon’s National Cross Dock network meant 30-plus days — and in some cases 40+ — before inventory was Prime-eligible. At their volume, that lag wasn’t an inconvenience; it was a structural drag on cash flow across thousands of SKUs at once. Monster Pets was, by their own account, Amazon Freight’s largest shipper on the East Coast — and still stuck waiting.
Then there were the fees. Amazon’s inbound placement fees were running into six figures in peak months. For an oversized or bulky pet item, where the margin lives, those fees plus returns and adjustments could quietly evaporate the profit on a product line.
And the in-house prep operation, while it worked, was heavy. Monster Pets ran its entire shipment-creation process from the office: ASIN labels printed in advance, packages pre-packaged, orders pre-built, all driven from a desk rather than the floor. It was labor-intensive, and they were buying new corrugated to ship product to Amazon that was already sitting in perfectly good manufacturer boxes.
The solution: get to the FC faster, and rebuild the line around it
ZonPrep’s pitch from Kayvon was simple and specific: kill the placement fees and collapse the time-to-Prime. Instead of dumping inventory into Amazon’s cross-dock network, Monster Pets sends optimized shipments to ZonPrep, where they’re consolidated and floor-loaded directly to Amazon’s regional fulfillment centers — bypassing the slow, expensive default path.
Brian didn’t just plug ZonPrep in at the end of his process. He rebuilt Monster Pets’ entire shipment-creation workflow around ZonPrep’s — and made it better in the process. Prep moved off the office desks and out onto the floor: hand scanners, laptops with picture confirmation, in-line labelers. The work is now faster, more automated, and less labor-intensive than the system it replaced.
“It’s a whole different game with ZonPrep — and it’s faster and it’s less labor-intensive. So we’ve also saved in labor. And then on top of that, I’ve probably cut my supply costs by 60%, because we’re reusing manufacturer corrugated as opposed to purchasing corrugated to send to Amazon.” — Brian Fennel, Owner, Monster Pets
Just as important: visibility. ZonPrep’s dashboard gives Monster Pets a real-time read on what’s happening to their inventory — how long product is dwelling, how fast it flips, when it becomes sellable, when it goes Prime-eligible. For an operator making buying decisions multiple times a week, that’s not a report you check monthly. It’s a live instrument.
There’s a downstream benefit too. Speed to Prime also keeps Monster Pets off the wrong side of the Low-Inventory-Level Fee — when product clears in days instead of weeks, you position inventory precisely instead of dumping it and waiting.
“Speed is cash. Being able to position yourself — and it’s your money, but it’s also free money, because I guarantee you the folks that don’t pay attention are losing it.” — Brian Fennel, Owner, Monster Pets
Why it works for a high-velocity reseller
ZonPrep is built for scale, and a lot of that scale story is told through enterprise brands shipping truckloads of a handful of ASINs. Monster Pets is the other proof point: a 4,500-SKU, replenish-weekly, on-demand operation where the value isn’t in moving one big thing — it’s in moving thousands of things fast, every single week, without bleeding placement fees on each one.
That’s the test that matters. If ZonPrep can take days out of the pipeline and zero out placement fees for a catalog this wide and this fast-moving, it can do it for almost anyone.
A note on visibility
Monster Pets pairs ZonPrep with ConnectBooks for ASIN-level profitability — and the two work well in tandem. ZonPrep delivers the operational wins (no placement fees, faster time-to-Prime, lower COGS); ConnectBooks lets Brian see those wins land at the SKU level, helping him to make smarter, more profitable inventory decisions. “We had items we thought were very profitable. But, when you factor in returns, reimbursements, and Amazon adjustments, they weren’t. The transparency ConnectBooks brings to our business is a game changer.”
As he put it, they do completely different things, and both have become necessities in how Monster Pets runs. For ZonPrep, the takeaway is straightforward: the savings are real enough that sophisticated operators are watching them show up in the books.
The results
The numbers Monster Pets put up speak for themselves:
- Placement fees, effectively eliminated. “I’ve reduced my placement fees pretty much to zero. That was Kayvon’s original selling point — we have now proved that concept.” In a single month, Monster Pets’ placement fees totaled just $952 — down from six figures in peak months.
- 14–20 days saved, per SKU. “At least 14. Probably closer to 20 on some items.” Across thousands of weekly replenishments, that’s a structural improvement in cash flow.
- Prime eligibility from the mid-teens to ~86–88%. Inventory that used to crawl through the cross-dock now lands Prime-ready at the regional FCs in a fraction of the time.
- ~60% lower prep supply costs, by reusing manufacturer corrugated instead of buying new boxes.
- Lower labor, from a prep line that’s faster and more automated than the one it replaced.
Wrapping up: Profitability visibility and speed
Monster Pets was already one of the best-run sellers on Amazon — top 50–75 overall, #1 in pet, with in-house account health and pricing teams. They didn’t need Amazon logistics explained to them. They needed the inbound bottleneck gone. ZonPrep took 14–20 days out of their pipeline, cut placement fees from six figures to under a thousand dollars a month, pushed Prime eligibility past 86%, and trimmed both prep supply costs and labor. And it did it for a reseller model most prep partners aren’t even built to handle.
Speed is cash. Monster Pets proved it.
